OAKLAND, Calif., Oct 30, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Versata Inc. (Nasdaq: VATA), a provider of software and services that automate the development, deployment and change management of transaction-based e-business, today announced that ORIX Australia Corporation Ltd. (NYSE: IX) has selected the Versata E-Business Automation System™ as a platform for all of its Web-based applications and new internal systems. Interim Technology (soon to be re-branded as Spherion), a leading provider of IT solutions in Australia, introduced the Versata System to ORIX.

ORIX specializes in the acquisition, financing and management of vehicles and other forms of transport, as well as the financing of manufacturing and construction plant and equipment. The company will build all of its Web applications with the Versata System and Java, as well as Web-enable many internal applications. After developing its Internet site, ORIX will build various Web-based applications, including a client-focused debt management system for a subsidiary debt collection agency, Austral Mercantile; a Web-based fleet management system; a retail vehicle sales and auction site for ORIX's off-lease vehicles; and a business-to-business XML data interchange for global fleet customers.

"We chose Versata because it addressed the strict time-to-market and change management requirements within our organization," said Michael Gasson, Internet Services Manager for ORIX. "We have a small development team of four in-house Web developers, so Versata will help us get systems up to speed faster using our existing resources. Versata's business rules-based approach is a better way to map our current business processes to our Web applications. We wanted to move away from Microsoft and PowerBuilder to a more scalable, pure Java solution. We needed both a rich development environment and a scalable, standards-based platform, but it was the business rules approach to automating e-business transactions that closed the deal."

Prior to selecting Versata, ORIX used product offerings from Sybase and Microsoft in its management systems. According to Gasson, the limitations of these systems to adapt to ever-changing business rules prompted ORIX to seek a system that was more flexible and easier to maintain. After a four-day trial session, ORIX selected the Versata rules-based technology over SilverStream for its speed of implementation and ease in changing applications.

"We are delighted with the outcome," said Mark Prior, Interim Technology's E-Business Director. "Working through the assessment process with ORIX provided a tremendous opportunity to showcase the flexibility and performance of Versata. ORIX now has the platform to better manage their e-business and really move it up a gear."

"Interim is a key partner for Versata in the Australian market. We are excited about their innovative solution for ORIX, an important player in Australia," said Mike DeVries, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Product Operations at Versata. "ORIX faced a situation where its previous solution was becoming increasingly difficult to manage. With Versata's technology, ORIX now has a solution that meets its needs as its business rules change and that allows it to keep up with the rapid pace of e-business."
